I have a 2 year old warmblood filly that I noticed "windpuffs" in all four fetlocks a couple of weeks ago. They are not huge, but I thought this might be unusual for a 2 year old not in work (she gets turned out in a large field 12 hours/day and gets 5-10 minutes of lunging 2 or 3 times a week). Also, she has puffiness on the backside of all 4 pasterns and there are no skin lesions or scratches anywhere. The swellings are all cool to the touch, nontender, and no lameness seems to be present. This may have all started after she was out in a thunderstorm and really ran around more than usual, but I'm not sure, since I may not have noticed it before. My question is, can this be normal? Should I be concerned about possible OCD? Would it be unusual to see OCD in all 4 joints like this? The swelling varies from day to day but lately has always been there to some degree. She is medium-boned, about 15.2 hands.

Hello Connie, There are many possible explanations, including the one you propose. I agree OCD is not a probable cause of quadrilateral swelling. The most important step to determining significance is to exactly define what structures are swollen. Windpuffs come in two forms and are also confused with a third swelling known as stocking up. For more on this see, Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Leg Swellings. There you will find articles on accurately identifying what is swollen and links to articles on the various conditions that should help you. DrO
