Is it true that a horse with a history of ulcers should not receive bute? I see many people feel BL Solution is not useful, so if bute shouldn't be used in a horse with a history of ulcers, what would one use to alleviate pain from, say, minor lameness, tender feet, what have you? I must say I have given my mare bute, and she has had ulcers, but now I've been told that practice is unwise.

You worded this much better than I It's my understanding that long term use of bute is not wise... if it's only short term and she has the opportunity to graze it helps a lot and minimizes the risk of the ulcers popping up again. I look forward to hearing other's opinions and Dr. O's answer.

This is not a well studied question Ellie but I believe gastric ulcers in horses for the greatest part are caused by management factors. Horses with a past history of confirmed ulcers that have had the management factors corrected can use bute with minimal risk. For more on these management factors see the article on Ulcers. Always the question then becomes how much and for how long and this all depends on the condition you are dealing with. You always have to balance risk and benefit. I have never created clinically apparent ulcers in horses with the use of bute though I have had some horses with serious chronic lameness on it for years. DrO

Thanks very much, Dr. O. That helps a lot. Now, if you could tell me why everyone who offers unasked for advice believes they know more than the vet.........
