Posted on Wednesday, Jul 12, 2006 - 10:51 am: I've been browsing some of the posts about chronic diarrhea but thought I'd start a message string that deals with some specific issues related to one horse in our barn. This horse has Cushing's, and due to a full spectrum of allergies, is strictly on alfalfa hay. He also receives LMF Stage One Low Carb, and is on Pergoglide. The owner is on a 6-week worming regimen, alternating 2 ivermectrin and 1 strongid. He also receives Dynamite Plus multivitamins, Electrolytes, Red Cell, and 2 scoops (6 TBSP) of ProBios. The owner has been battling with diarrhea on and off for a few years now, but it's definitely getting worse and she's at a loss as to what to do with him, as am I. She has tried Neigh Lox and Psyllium as well, and has noticed a temporary improvement (usually 3-5 days). I'm wondering if there are some other products / techniques to try, and I have some questions as to whether or not he has some other issues that exacerbate the problems he has, as his diarrhea has gotten worse over the last week or two. He recently was given chemotherapy as a treatment for two tumors in his lower lip...could this be causing more loose stool? After his last chemo treatment (last week), he ended up having a mild impaction colic. The owner had been giving him psyllium beyond the recommended 7 days, and the responding vet tubed him with his mineral oil "milkshake." This obviously started things running, but the diarrhea has been continuous, and the tubing occurred last Thursday. Could the mineral oil still be affecting him? Also, I'm wondering if the amount of fresh grass he consumes can have an effect...I've heard that Cushing's horses should not be allowed too much pasture time, but haven't yet gotten around to researching it thoroughly. At any rate, I'd appreciate any input, and am so grateful to have such a great resource at my disposal...it can be hard to pin down a vet long enough to extract all this information. |

I need to amend my posting to note that the horse currently has relatively solid stool but is also experiencing a wet discharge. He was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer and was treated with a localized chemotherapy injection, but regrettably I don't know the name of it offhand. The owner had also been giving the horse Canola oil...that wouldn't be affecting his manure, would it? |

Posted on Wednesday, Jul 21, 2010 - 7:52 pm: Hello from AlabamaI sympathize with any of you who have a horse with chronic diarrhea. My 23 year half Arabian was diagnosed with “inflammatory bowel disease” by the Auburn University, School of Veterinary Medicine, Large Animal Hospital in April 2010. The good news is that she has regained her weight, is eating well (Purina Senior), plus additional vitamins, etc. We have had five days of “almost normal stools,” but today we are back to the bad diarrhea. She is on heavy doses of steroids, Metronidazole, Pergoglide for Cushings. My local Vet suggests that we experiment with the steroids and Metronidazole by giving them every other day. This week, I skipped medications for two days so today, we are back at square one. The team of veterinarians at Auburn said that the prognosis is “poor.” Question: I have been reading about “Dynamite Miracle Clay.” Does anyone have any experience with it? Thanks Attention: There are two “Fayes” posting about two different subjects. I enjoy reading the other “Faye’s” posts, but I am particularly interested in “Steroids and Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Please help. Faye Kinstler fkinstler@windstream.net |

There are other products on the market that seem to help also, like the one put out by Platinum Performace. I can't think of the name of theirs, but it's on their website.IBS in people is often related to auto-immune diseases or allergies. Did anyone mention this possibility? I am wondering if some of the horses with IBS/diarhea could be tested for food allergies and if that would help them? In people, gluten is often a culpret. Just am curious, but does anyone know if this is a possibility with horses? |

If I don't split his dosage and give it to him AM and PM the diarrhea returns. I put this in a thread about him in the cushings section, other people said that the pergolide caused diarrhea in their horses too. Could this be a possibility? |
