There was a slight swelling of the leg which prompted the examination but there was no lameness or heat and the horse had been ridden out for a few days prior to the vet seeing him. Each day he was perfectly sound. He is an 8yo t/bred (ex racehorse) and he was eventing to Novice level. The vet has indicated a period of up to a year off work. Is it possible that a horse could have been worked with a 20% tear with no further damage? What is the best treatment for this injury? Can you give any indication as to the prognosis for the injury? |

Posted on Saturday, Oct 4, 2008 - 8:30 am: Hello foxr,I must say with no lameness I would be surprised if your horse has a acute 25% tear in the flexor tendon. This should result in a remarkable lameness and swelling around the tear. However I want you to re-discuss this with your veterinarian to be sure you understood him correctly. Does he know your horse is not lame and if so how does he explain the diagnosis? Let me redirect you to Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Lower Limb » Flexor Tendinitis which discusses this condition in horses, including treatment and prognosis.
