Hi you helped me through a rough patch earlier this year when my 13 year old mare had strangles and an abcessed lymph node. This burst at the end of March and she has been symptom free and doing well ever since then. But over the past week I have seen her have 2 mild nosebleeds. One was when she was resting in the shelter on a very hot day and I put it down to the heat. The other was when I was riding her but only slowly and she snorted a bit. Normally I would not worry as they are slight (just a trickle of bright red blood always in left nostril which dries within a minute) but she has never had them before. Her temperature is normal, she has put on loads of weight and seems fine in every respect but I am worried incase she is still carrying the bug ( the vet didn't think it necessary to swab her after healing as she seemed recovered) and it's doing damage to her URT /gutteral pouch. Am I worrying over nothing or would you advise having her scoped/swabbed? Thanks once again.

Hi - Thanks for that - What I'm now thinking is that as it was on both occasions a small amount of blood from the left nostril that it may not be a guttural pouch infection as wouldn't that cause discharge in both nostrils? Rather than the stress to the horse and the cost to me of endoscoping her I'm tending towards waiting to see if she has further episodes but am a little worried by the sentence '...in the case of guttural pouch mycosis may lead to a rapidly terminal event'as I certainly don't want to find her dead just because I waited! In your opinion is she at any increased risk of this serious condition because of the strangles episode a few months ago? And are there any other signs or symptoms that I can check her over for?- she sometimes has a mild clear discharge from that nostril with occasional tiny white flecks in but nothing that has struck me as much different to usual. Thanks

My apologies Jo,
While searching for something else I came across this request for information that apparently fell through the cracks of my email service. How is your mare doing?

Thanks - she seems fine now, has had no further nosebleeds after those two, is holding her weight and riding out normally so fingers crossed we're out of danger now.
