Hi
I have read somewhere that laminitis is rare if not unheard of in horses under 4 years old but I don't know why this would be as surely their mechanisms are the same as an older horse? I am asking as I have to move my 18month old gelding onto ungrazed pasture soon and although I have sectioned it off it will still be a lot more than he has now - will he be at risk of laminitis?

Can you cut the pasture? I would because I can not see any horse would be safe on a ungrazed pasture. The least would be the better. If you could I would do it SLOWLY. Like 15 minutes for a week or two and then 30 minutes for another week and increase after that. I have a friend that has had her horse on pasture for a long time and the horse still foundered.

Ditto to what Wanda said - I would not risk putting any horse on ungrazed pasture without making the move very, very gradual, perhaps even more gradual than Wanda suggests, depending on what the horse is used to.
