  Discussion on Cataracts
Author Message

Posted on Monday, Nov 6, 2000 - 7:34 pm:

My 19-year-old mare suddenly developed a cataract in her right eye two days ago. My vet did an opthalmic exam today and found that the lens had a mature cataract and had sub luxated. She has lost sight in the eye and has tearing and light-sensitivity. My vet explained that cataracts are very common in older horses and there is really no treatment. However, he has left topical gentamycin, prednison, and atropine that I am to apply for 7 days.
I am concerned that what this might be is ERU and that we should be doing more than just the topical treatments. She has a history of tearing but I always attributed that to just minor irritation or allergies.

This does not sound like ERU to me. If you are concerned about the diagnosis and treatment I recommend you get a second opinion.
