Dear Dr. O, My paint mare, the one with the splint bone fracture, and repair, things are going well. Anyway I went to change her bandage today and on the outside of the gamgee was a stain that at first looked like blood. On closer inspection it has more of a browny-orange coloring to it. It was not coming from anywhere on the leg, and it appeared to me to be a urine stain. She has had a feed change since going to the new barn where she is recovering from her surgery, she was moved there on Nov. 4th, now Nov.20th. She had been on straight grass hay previous to the move and is now on a grass /alfalfa mix. Everything else seems to be fine. She doesn't appear to be tying up or have any reason to at this point. Has been on stall rest this whole time. Could there be a correlation between the feed change and the urine discoloration? Is there something that I should have checked? Thanks Kim

I am sorry Kim, without looking at the stain I cannot know its source. Horse urine can have quite a dark color normally but I am not sure if this is what you are seeing. Does it smell like urine? Why not take it to your vet and show him?
