Posted on Sunday, Dec 10, 2000 - 12:45 pm: I have a filly who has now had four bouts of abesses diognoised as pigeon fever--the first time the vet lanced the absess--the remaining times we have let them run their course--the vet has given her antibotics three or four times--now again we have two new absesses --one on the belly and one closer to her teat area--they have all been in this area--my vet is coming out again today and I will get the name of the antibiotic that he has been using--should I get another opinion or does anyone have a suggestion on how to treat this so we get rid of it for good--I just get her healed up and she gets another one--we have no more flies so it must be in her system and it is taking a tole on her--I need some advice and or some help on how to combat this problem |

Posted on Sunday, Dec 10, 2000 - 5:25 pm: hi dixie, boy isn't this a nightmare..?? my long yearling came down with this lump on his chest,(point of shoulder) i thought he had been kicked.. but as days went by the lump got harder, larger, hotter, then a pocket of warm fluid was draining between his legs,(edema) but no open wound as of yet...so i took him to the clinic... my fear was correct, pigeon fever.. i was told to hot pack it, keep it moist and to wait for it to break open itself... it did within 14 days of me first noticing the lump... the wound was small at first,(pencil hole) and grew in size the next 4 days to about a 4 knuckle hole...all along i kept it flushed (with my turkey baster!) scrubbed it raw daily and kept it moist.. now 7 days later the wound has closed up completely and looks like a thumb print wart, which i am still scrubbing and making it bleed (hopefully to avoid a scar).. i have 'heard' that because this did not run a very long course that i should be on the watch for another lump... i hope that this will NOT occur.... he was never on any meds at all , not even bute...good luck this is a messy illness.... dres |
