My arabian mare has developed deeper clefts in 2 hooves with a definite "mushy" frog in one hoof. There is absolutely no smell, however I am concerned this could be thrush. Is this what early thrush looks like? There is no black "goo". Thanks for any input.

Nope, thrush is black and smelly whether early or not. DrO

So, Dr. O....what would cause this mare to have a deeper cleft in those two feet, then? My arabian gelding has the same thing going on. He's developed almost a "hole" in the cleft of his frog on two feet, and while I can't smell anything (and I have smelled thrush before) I am confused as to what could cause this softness...thanks! That is a question for someone who can examine the foot but these are two of the more common possibilities for the deepening cleft: contracting heels or allowing the foot to grow longer. Unfortunately i acnnot jusdge whether the softness that you feel is within a range of normal or indicates some disease process but hoof canker is an example of a disease of the frog that makes it abnormally soft. I am in a bit of a rush this morning but I will see if I can get something up about canker today of tomorrow. (Jordana, I have not forgot about your curb either.) DrO
