  Discussion on Buy HYPP gelding?

Dr. O,
I'm looking at a very nice 3yr QH gelding who is Impressive bred. They said he tested N/H. I read your article on HYPP but otherwise have not had any experience with this. Does this diagnosis mean he is heterozygous? The sellers say they have not seen any symptoms , give him no meds and feed him alfalfa and an oat/corn mix for grain. He would be used for 4-H , trailriding and possible light lessons. What would I be getting into or maybe best to keep looking? Thanks for the input.

Yes, this horse is heterozygous. I am afraid I cannot answer this question for you Kari, but perhaps I can give you some quidelines. First you must understand that you may have problems where the current owners did not. I do not know what the chances of this are. What you have to do is carefully outline your goals then ask your self does this horse match my goals. If he does then you must decide how much risk you are willing to take. Only by weighing these factors can you make a decision.

Dr. O,
Not sure what I'm going to do but thanks.
