This is a repost of my earlier one--where I didn't follow the rules and put it at the end of another discussion

Stacy, suggested that I post a picture. I will try to do that tomorrow.

Hi, I just joined, and this is my first post. I have tons of horse problems right now, but I will start with this one.

My yearling filly developed swelling around the right front fetlock 3 weeks ago. A vet did an exam + xrays to rule out OCD and related problems. Nothing negative turned up via the exam or the x-rays. The conclusion was that the filly just banged her leg somehow.

They sent me home with a large vet bill and a potion (their own recipe) to spray on the swelling once a day--it has DMSO in it among other undisclosed ingredients. I used it for one week, and over time, the swelling lessened, but she still has what appear to be bubbles of fluid on the inside and outside of the fetlock--the outside one is larger--perhaps the size of a half-dollar.

I gave her bute for 2 days last week to see if that would reduce the swelling--it didn't.

She is not lame, and the swelling doesn't appear to be painful, but I am worried because it is hanging on so long.

This filly has very large bone, and she seems quite large for her age.

THANK YOU. cynthia

Hi Cynthia, I can't help you with your medical problem, but I wanted to say that the stallion in your profile is beautiful!
Welcome to HA.

Welcome cynthia,
The important question here is, "exactly what is swollen and what is it swollen with?". Just labelling it traumatic does not really answer this question: what was traumatized?

These are the questions that should have been answered by the veterinarians who looked at the horse and determine proper treatment and prognosis. If you can return us this information we might have more specific advice but in the meantime see Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases » Swellings / Localized Infection / Abscesses » Diagnosing and Assessing Swellings in Horses.
