Discussion on Superficial Digital Felxor Tendon (Right fork as it inserts into pastern)
Author Message

Hi all. Right up front, sorry about my spelling.

Recently, the vet school diagnosed my horse as having a lesion in the right fork (Medial?) of the Superdigital Flexor Tendon as it inserts into the pastern.

My vet said the ultrasound shows a "thinning" of the tendon fibers. Not any holes or tears, just a "thinning".

Any ideas how long this will take to heal? He has been on stall/small paddock rest for over 60 days now. This injury occured in Dec. but they missed it on the first unltrasound and caught it in January. It's been almost 30 days since the correct diagnosis was made. We have been doing walking every night and since the Jan. Diagnosis, standing wraps with a sweat 2x a week.

My vet said it's OK to ride him at the walk, which we have been doing this past month, and he seems just fine with it.

Just looking for some input, I know it's hard when you can't see the pics for yourself.

Hello Meghan,
even with the pictures it is impossible to predict the exact course, that is why healing soft tissue injuries is done a step at a time (see article on flexor tendintis) and each step done in response to the results of the last step.

I have to admit being a little perplexed at the finding of thinning fibers(?): what do they think is the reason for the thinning of the fibers? It is this evaluation that will determine the prognosis.
