A question here about whether it would be advisable to soak sore feet in epsom salts and betadine in warm water (or wrap with a poultice) to ease tender, possibly bruised feet after being trimmed. Until now I have used venice turpentine or painted the soles with iodine to toughen them up but present mare is still quite sore after a week of going barefoot in either mud or snow. I thought the soaking might be soothing but wonder if it might counteract the toughening process.

It may depend on the Epsons concentration: if there is enough epsons it should toughen the feet and the warm water may increase the rate of growth. I have to admit I have quit soaking tender feet in lieu of painting the bottom with toughening agents. DrO

I just had my horses shoes pulled for the winter. Last year, I did this rather late and the ground was frozen. He was very sore and became extremely lame after a few days so I had the farrier put studded shoes and pads on him. This year I decided to do this early so the ground would still be soft. My horse is sole sore from being barefoot. Two front feet are worse than the back. It's been two days. I am painting w/venice terpentine. Should I give him bute too, or wait it out to see if his soles toughen up? I just don't want to do any long term or permanent damage. Horse is on 24 hour turnout with stall access. I am not riding him until he gets better. Thanks!
