My friends 12 yr old saddlebred I'm boarding at my house was seen yesterday by Vet he was coughing and breathing very heavly he has had this problem off and on for the last couple years Vet said he could have possible Pleuritis and would need X-rays to find out if he has this, I would just like a better explanation of this disease and if it can be cured. Thank you

The pleura is a membrane that covers the thoracic cavity and lungs. So pleuritis is an inflammation of this lining. I need to defer to DrO if it is curable and possible cause. In humans it is curable. Carol

Hello All, To quote a recent retrospective study of the treatment of this condition: While modern veterinary medicine and surgery have significantly reduced the death rate from pleuropneumonia, horses that develop the disease have a high probability of not returning to their prior use. We do have some scientific summaries on this condition of horses on the Respiratory Disease menus, we really should have an article. I will see if we can get it put together this month. Amy, just post your questions one time in the appropriate forum discussions. It makes keeping The Advisor organized much easier. DrO
