Discussion on Healthy mare , no pregnancy | |

Posted on Monday, Apr 2, 2001 - 4:12 am: I have a healthy 9 year old Arab mare, she has been under lights in the barn, and has been cycling normally ( every 22 days). She came into heat 3/8/01, was ultrasounded by the vet on her 3rd (follicle was 30mm), 4th (follicle was 33mm), and 5th (follicle was 37mm) day of heat, so the vet could track follicle growth since we are using shipped semen, she was given a shot to make her ovulate on her 5th day of heat and was bred on day 6, ultrasounded again on day 7 and follicle was gone, 2 days later developed what we thought was mastitis in her right teat, called vet, administered bute for 2 days along with sulfa drugs for 5 days in case we were dealing with an infection, although temp on vet exam was normal. Draining the teat and applying hot and cold compresses helped greatly, seemed things were going alright, had her ultrasounded on day 16 and no pregnancy... She is not a maiden mare, had a filly May of 2000. This is the 1st of April and she is back in heat, should we do the ovualtion shot again? I have heard things about giving the shot that concern me. I also wonder if we are trying to early in the season, but here in Az, the breeding season has been under way since late Jan early Feb. Also, we had this mare cultured in Late January and her results came back clean. Any advice would greatly be appreciated, I am learning the breeding thing is costly. Spent lots of money and seems I'm looking to spend more. |

Second, why did you ovulate the mare 24 hours before insemination? They should be inseminated prior to ovulation. It could be you misunderstood. If HCG was given on day 5 it would be expected that ovulation would occur 36 hours later, though this varies quite a bit from individual to individual. For more information on this and the drugs see the article, Equine Reproduction: Breeding and Foaling: Heat (Estrus) Detection, Ovulation Prediction, and Timing Insemination. DrO PS Shannon, when posting a new question do not post it at the bottom of someone elses discussion. Posted on Monday, Apr 2, 2001 - 4:33 pm: The mare was given the HCG shot on day 5 by the vet, she said the reason they give the shot prior to ovulation is because ovulation takes anywhere from 12 to 36 hours and the semen was due the following am ( day 6) as for the HCG shot, she had one shot, as for dosage I am unsure. Also, at every exam my mare was sedated to ensure the safety of the vet, the mare was a bit nervous and the vet is 7 mos pregnant. Could the sedating have had any effect? Thank you |

Posted on Wednesday, Apr 4, 2001 - 8:18 am: Right I got it, you "gave the HCG shot on the 5th day", not "to make her ovulate on the 5th day".That all looks fine and I don't think the sedatives if standard products and standard doses were used, are a cause of infertility. We have articles on all your conens that will go into great detail. First check out the article, Equine Reproduction: Breeding and Foaling: Heat (Estrus) Detection, Ovulation Prediction, and Timing Insemination then read the article associated with this forum, Equine Diseases: Reproductive Diseases: Trouble Settling Mares & Stallion Infertility: Mare Infertility Diagnosis: cycles but does not settle. They should answer your questions and fill in the background. DrO |
