Discussion on Small circle on coffin bone

The radiograph shows a small circle the size of a marble on the coffin bone. The vet says it is an infection. What could cause this and what treatment can help?

Hello Renee,
without knowing the history, examing the horse, and seeing the radiograph I cannot really make a meaningful statement. I am assuming your horse is lame and the lameness blocks out in the foot. The article associated with this forum discusses the characteristics you look for in a radiograph and their possible interpretation. It may help you.

It you are unsure of your veterinarians diagnosis, I recommend you have the radiographs sent to a radiologist for a second opinion.

My vet here has sent the images to Michigan State and advises that I take the horse there for an evaluation. The infection is very close to the joint and my vet fears that either steriod injections or even surgery that close to the joint could blow the joint.
