Posted on Tuesday, Mar 23, 2004 - 11:54 pm: My mare foaled today and has been a bit colicky (vet diagnosis)...Now 10hrs after birth. Primarily she is unconfortable, picking up her back legs and pacing the stall which I haven't seen before. She also has not had a bowel movement since the birth. What should you do in a case like this. It doesn't seem severe, but I am concerned, she seems more unconfortable than sick. Also, what drugs should you give and NOT give a mare who has just foaled. ie. Banamine, Ace, etc. Thanks for your help. |

Concerning the use of drugs you can find information on indications and contraindications in the aricles on the drugs in the medication section.DrO |

Posted on Wednesday, Mar 24, 2004 - 11:37 am: Dr. Oglesby I stayed up all night reading the articles concearing the use of drugs and checking on mom and the baby "Raging Ritz" all night. Call me stupid but I can't undersand much of those articles. Could you please give me an idea of what they are saying in those articles. "This is the primary reason why I paid for the subscription to this service, for so help." So could you please spell itout in laymen terms? I can't even tell which medications are what we call them. A friend of mine had an unfortunate accident and I don't want that to happen to me because of ignorance, on the subject. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. |

There is no simple answer to the question, "what drugs can I give my horse safely" whether she has just foaled or not. Everything depends on the particular situation as every drug has benefits and problems and the proper use is a judgement made by balancing the pros against the cons. This is a judgement that should be made by your veterinarian.Information on drugs is provided, not so that you can start prescribing drugs for your horse, but to provide you with an opportunity to learn about the drugs your veterinarian is recommending. With this information you are able to discuss drug issues with your veterinarian in a more knowledgable manner. Each article is divided into 2 parts. The first part is written with the horseowner in mind and should not be difficult to understand. The second part under the heading of "Scientific Reports" consists of summarys of recent veterinary and scientific research and is placed there for those with a scientific bend so they can easily find the latest research. If you do read something you do not understand or if you have a question about something being done, I would be glad to address your question but I cannot give you a list of drugs that would be safe to administer to your horse, that requires an examination.
