Discussion on Foal diarrhea for over a week | |

Posted on Wednesday, May 30, 2001 - 9:05 am: I have a foal that is two weeks, four days old. She began having diarrhea about eight days ago. I have been giving her a half/half mixture of pepto bismol and kaopectate three times daily. After a day or two of administration she would appear to be doing fine, but by the next evening her stool would be liquid again. This cycle has happened twice. Through all of this the filly has been happy, hydrated and fairly, and at times very, energetic. Am I overreacting? You said the foal heat diarrhea lasts about three days so how long is too long and at what point should I have a vet look into this? Also, should I give her the oral mixture for a longer period of time? How about the feed--the mare was very low on milk so I am putting milk plus in her pellet/grain feed, so should I back off? Thanks in advance for your advice. |

As to whether she needs the supplement or not, that is a call for your veterinarian to make after examining the mare and foal. What made you think the mare may have too little milk?DrO |

I am the one who e-mailed you about the dual medication of Domperidone and Reserpine at the same time.By the way, absolutely no one that I've talked to has heard of giving both of these at the same time although there have been comparative studies done on administering Domperidone and Reserpine by themselves to agalatic mares. While the effects of the reserpine appear to not be showing up on my mare, I wonder how it has affected the colt. As for the diarrhea, my vet has prescribed medicine for the colt that gets the bacteria in the gut working. I'm going to pick it up this afternoon. I'll let you know how it proceeds from here. |
