I noticed about a week ago that my gelding's urethra tip is red and slightly swollen. He doesn't appear to have any discomfort while peeing. He has been on legend (1 per week) and adequine (every 4 days) shots since Aug 17. He was also on bute for a few days at that time. I recently started him on a flaxseed meal suppliment. Would either the drugs or suppliments contribute to the inflammation? I have cleaned his sheath within the last month.

I think the tip always looks swollen and red. I also think because we do not look at it all the time sometimes we look and it looks bad and in reality it is fine. Be careful about cleaning to much. The peeling usually comes off itself. Happy Trails,

Wanda is right some folks interpretation of red and swollen of the urethra is within normal but we cannot judge your findings specifically. None of the drugs or nutriceuticals should cause such change. However trauma, urinary tract infection, or cancer can cause such findings. Are there any symptoms of difficult urination(?), if not consider trying a little Neosporin but if it remains abnormal or worsens consult your veterinarian. The article on Normal Urination discusses the diagnosis of urinary problems. DrO
