Discussion on Thyroid supplementation -- probable misdiagnosis

I know I that as a new member I am reinventing the wheel on this topic. I've read through the research papers and a ton of the posts on the (mis)diagnosis and treatment of hypothyroidism.

One of my mares failed to settle last year, and we did a hormone panel, and the thyroid came back as 1.1 (there was only one test). So, she was put on thyroid supplementation (Thyroid L).

After reading the research papers, I see that she did not display any of the symptoms of low thyroid (unthrifty, poor appetite, depression) except the possible infertility. (I have also reached the conclusion that this mare was very likely bred on too small a follicle last year, but that is a matter for a different posting.)

Unless Dr. O or some other member advises against it, I intend to wean her off the Thyroid L (over 4 months, removing 1/4 scoop every 4 weeks).

I have one other question about the use of thyroid supplementation: The vet that originally prescribed it said to withdraw the supplement in the fall as thyroid levels naturally rise during that time of year. Another vet told me that the supplement should be used year round and generally for the rest of the mare's breeding life.

Slowly weaning is what I would advise Cynthia and as to whether to begin or not should be very clear from the article. Assuming she settled, I think it circumstantial following supplementation.
