For some time now my mare has had an on-agin-off-again mild lameness I mistakenly thought was her left fore. She would almost always start out our rides with a slight head bob when her left fore touched down. Sometimes it would disappear in a few minutes, sometimes it would persist, sometimes it would come and go. It didn't seem to matter whether I was doing ring work (sand footing) or out on trails or roads. We initially thought stone bruises, but she didn't respond adversely to hoof testers. Then a few days ago a friend rode out on the roads with me and watched from behind. She said that coincident with the times Molly's head would do the light bobbing, she would be stepping far under her midline with her left hind, to the point where she was crossfiring (I thought she was forging when I heard the click, as she is due to be shod), striking her right hind. This happened at a good, strong trot. At the walk, I could then discern a difference in the sound her right hind foot made when it hit the ground, as opposed to her other feet. The right hind made an almost hollow, plopping sound. She performs well, and this doesn't happen continuously. We did a 50 mile endurance ride in April, and at the end she was very tight in her LEFT hind hamstrings, but loosened up with a bit of massage and otherwise vetted out fine. I plan to take her in to the local clinic for a workup, and our vet is known as the "leg man" in the area, so I'm confident he'll come up with a diagnosis, but in the meantime I am curious to hear what people's opinions on this are. Thanks in advance.

I wonder about the localization Zoe. Occasionally you see a hind limb lameness that presents with a head bob at the trot but when you do it is usually the ipsilateral (same side) leg. In other words the head is up when the lame rear leg is in the swing phase. DrO

Interesting, Dr. O. No, I am pretty sure it is the right hind. The farrier was there today and concurred he could see a "hitch" there, and her left hind shoe was worn quite a bit more than the right, though they were both very even side to side. Both fronts were even and normally worn.

Is there a head bob that caused you to think it was the front? DrO

Yes, Dr. O, a light bob upwards, sometimes barely noticeable, sometimes more so, at the point in her stride at the trot when her left fore touches down.

The description above does not provide any real clues as to where in the leg the problem is Zoe so we will have to wait for the exam. DrO
