Hi DrO, Early last week I noticed a layer on two of my long yearling's frogs had started 'loosening'. A day or so later the layer came off when I picked her feet. There are frogs underneath, there is no odor and the 'new' frog is not sensitive. It had been bone dry for 60 days or more prior and then it rained for 3 or so days before I noticed this. I have been out of town for the past 6 days and when I cleaned her feet this AM, one of the feet with the shedded frog has a bit of a chalky sole (it rained 2 out of the 6 days that I was gone). Is this a thrush concern or do young horses shed their frogs as part of their feet 'growing out of them'? Could both the shedding frogs and the chalkiness just be because of the ground being wet after it had been dry for so long? Thanx, LeeC

Hello Lee, Horses do shed their frogs as a whole layer sometimes and is not a sign of a problem. And the chalky appearance could be do to the wetness but I am less certain of its significance without looking at it. These are often discussed subjects so try a search on the discussions for others experiences. Be sure to set the search parameters to "AND" so as to bring up the most relevant topics. DrO

Thanx, DrO My farrier will be up to trim her feet this weekend, so I'll see if he has anything to say about the chalkiness. LeeC
