My riding donkey has had two episodes of founder and has non-clinical pedal osteitis in one or both front feet (different diagnosis, different vets). The right foot has founder rotation and the pedal osteitis. I always keep her shod with pads in the front, and presently we are using the EDSS impression material as she's recovering from founder. She is progressing well and was even loping in the field this morning. If I can keep her from foundering again, I'm sure I'll be able to ride her next summer. I enjoy taking pack trips into wilderness areas. I have taken my riding donkey on two trips and she did great. She had the pedal osteitis before both trips. I am wondering if she will ever be able to go on these trips again. I don't want to be twenty miles from the trailhead, and have her come up lame. We don't pack much feed, so she'd be eating meadow grass. What if she foundered? Donkeys are very stoic, so they don't always show when they're in pain until the pain becomes severe. On the other hand, she'd be in good condition and hopefully leaner before the trip. She'd have shoes on all four feet with pads in front. She has not had problems with feed changes on pack trips before. What experience have others had with soundness on long rides for equines with serious lameness issues? Nancy

Nancy, I don't take horses with serious lameness issues on long rides nor do I recommend it. DrO
