Hi DrO I didnt know where to post this question- I hope here is ok. Im thinking of adopting a 4 year old rescue mare. She was starved but is doing well now except that she has a hernia. The lady said she is going to get the surgery (that uses the netting) on her before I adopt her. Im wondering what the prognosis usually is for hernia operations.I know you cant give diagnosis- just looking for all little general info on it. I would like to use this mare for lower level dressage and trail riding. thanks

Hello Leslie, The prognosis following surgery all depends on how big the hernia is and which layers of the wall of the abdomen are defective. The fact that netting is going to be used suggests to me a very large hernia...Hmmm can we an accurate description by a veterinarian or perhaps a picture? If the image, be sure to use your flash and get the sun behind you. DrO

DrO I talked to the lady and she said the hernia is 2 finger. The vet had clamped it in feb. mare was kept in barn for 1 1/2 month then turned out. after 1 month of turn out it partially reopened. She had vet come take a look and he couldnt figure out why it reopened....Shes taking her to surgical center in phx to have the mesh hernia surgery. Sorry, I dont have any pics right now. Is 2 finger considered large?

No, two fingers is not large and will not need a mesh surgery to close, this should not be a problem but have it repaired before you buy the horse in case their are unexpected complications. DrO

Leslie, I'm a "human" nurse, LOL, and I can tell you first hand that mesh for hernia repairs in people do not work and often need to be repaired again and again. I don't think it's perfected for people so that makes me wonder how well it's going to work in an equine! Just my 2cents!
