Greetings, all. One of the horses in our barn has recently been diagnosed with ringworm. I know it's very infectious, but haven't had to deal with it firsthand. Since we have limited turnout arrangements (we have 11 horses turned out in 3 paddocks throughout the day), should the infected horse be quarantined, or is he ok to go out? Everyone's pretty nervous, as a local barn had a serious issue with ringworm, causing a couple of horses to be out of commission for months. Thanks for the input! Dawn

Hello Dawn, If everyone is nervous I would keep them separate until the hair starts to come in evenly. DrO

Dr O, I have a horse at our barn that came to us with a open sore on her face about a month ago. She now has the open sores at the coronary bands of three of her legs and on the hocks of two legs, as well as on the chest. The face has heeled after treatments of topical Bacitracin. We have tried to repeat this with the other areas but it is only helping minimally. The sores are seeping and are about 4" in diameter. We try to keep her cleaned and wrapped daily to protect her from further spreading. But she also has a thyroid problem and we are unsure of her immune system. She is a 16 year old american paint and this just started to effect her recently. If you have any advise it would be appreciated. She is such a good horse and it pains me to see her in so much discomfort.

If this is ringworm wouldn't turnout in the sun do her a lot of good? In Holland the disease comes often with rain and disapears when it has been dry and sunny. You being able to treat her will just speed up the healing process? Jos

Hello Janet, I remain uncertain if this is ringworm but then again Bacitracin may not be very effective against ringworm. For a list of diagnostic possibilities check out Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Hair and Coat Problems / Itching / Irritated Skin » Overview of Hair Loss & Irritated Skin and go through the list of diseases that cause sores. If after reviewing the article and its links you are still unsure start a new discussion describing the condition, particularly how it first starts and possibly images would be helpful but often atypical skin diseases require diagnostic work up as described in the article.
