Does anyone know what would cause a change in normally white hooves to melon-colored? The soles and walls that is. This is a hot discussion in my American Asso. of Natural Hoof Care Practitioners'support group right now. One experienced trimmer said it was from serum oozing into the soles and walls, even though the horses that wear the hooves are not and never were lame. At least a couple of student trimmers say they have seen this, and it was not the normal usual color for these horses' hooves. THere doesn't seem to be one similar factor involved that anyone can pinpoint. I just have a problem with the idea it is that much serum oozing when the horses were never lame. DrO? Thanks, Cindy

Melon is more likely bruising with some amount of bleeding. But the occasional darker yellow to melon area as a focal spot is very common in horses with white hooves. If all the hooves are evenly discolored hmm, something is staining them and if it did not grow from the top down it is most likely something in the environment. DrO

I was going to say "bruises," too, Cynthia. I have never seen the "melon-color" all over the hoof walls and soles, but have definitely seen it in spots and, in fact, have one horse who looks bruised on one of his quarters right now, so was just thinking about this topic yesterday.
