I have a Holsteiner/TB colt born 27 June 2001. He is robust, healthy, active but has a swollen rt hind fetlock, since birth, and slightly swollen tendon. There is no heat, no lameness, and range of motion seems fine. Vet xrays revealed sesamoids slightly "lower than normal" and a "flattened area on distal cannon bone that appears abnormal". Vet will re-xray in two weeks. My vet suggested that this might me a "congenital deformity". Does anyone have experience with this? What would be the prognosis if he stays sound? Thanks for any help with these questions. Mary

Hello Mary, Without looking at the horse and radiographs there is no way we can diagnose the problem much less prognose it. It should be noted that listed in the range of normal for radiography of the fetlock in the lateromedial and flexed lateromedial view is: 1. Flattening of sagittal ridge of third metacarpal bone with no subchondral lysis and/or fragment 2. Flattening of distal palmar/plantar articular surface of third metacarpal/ metatarsal bone with no subchondral lysis. Dr. O, thank you for your comments. Perhaps we will know more after the next set of films. We will do his normal fetlock for comparisons. Mary
