friend bought pony

his history: was at a horse auction for about a month was pastured in 40 acres with other horse's was bought by private party they had him for a couple weeks than my friend bought him have owned him 2 weeks as of last friday.

what's going on: noticed some mild DrOoling all last week didn't think to much of it untill yesturday he started having excessive DrOoling now there 2-2yr old geldings and there 8yr old gelding have the same symptoms but the pony ever once in a while is coughing out green colored silava(sp?) no fever no loss of appitiate they have a little clover but the colts have had No access to it this year, symptoms say possible clover posioning but like I said colts have had no access to it. do you have any idea what this could be???

If the pony is avoiding food and water and has a fever, you may be dealing with strangles which is not uncommon in horses that hang around auction barns. Usually there is a thick yellowish discharge from the nostrils and the horses are quite despondent. Glands behind the jaw will most likely show tenderness and swelling.

Hello Amy,
There are lots of possiblities and upper respiratory tract infections are at the top of the list but not the only things on it. Best is to get the vet out when the horse is sick.
