Discussion on Improper twin management by vet? | |

Posted on Wednesday, Aug 1, 2001 - 7:57 pm: Dr. OI have a mare that was bred May 16. We ultrasounded on June 1, she was in foal with twins. One embryo looked to be larger than the other and they were not adjacent to each other so our vet decided to wait until June 4 to pinch the smaller embryo. An attempt was made on the 4th of June which looked to be to be unsuccessful to my untrained eye(They usually have disappeared immediately upon crushing on the US). We gave her banamine iv and regumate 10cc for three days following this attempt. On June 11 we Ultrasounded again and the "normal" embryo appeared to be the proper size and the crushed embryo was smaller but still visible(diameter of golf ball) The vet attempted to pinch again on the 11th. He checked her agaain on the 13th to see if she was in foal and was but this sttructure of the apparently crushed embryo was still visible. Our vet chose to leave things alone. On July 2 I had her checked agaain. This structure is still present but only slightly bigger if at all than our last check. The remaining embryo is healthy. We checked her on July 23 and our vet appears to be completely stumped about this pregnancy so he said he is going to ask another vet he knows. My question is, if this structure is implanted, will it harm the developing fetus and prevent it from being carried to term? How can we determine what the structure is and its impact on the developing fetus? In your experience, could pinching at 26 days post ovulation be too late ? |

If her last breeding date was May 16th she should now be 75 days along! The fetus, if there is one, should be visible with a heart beat by day 25 post ovulation, and my machince is not that new. So are there two fetuses in there or not? Could it be the one that would not crush is a cyst?DrO |
