This actually is a long story but I will keep it short. A boarded horse from my farm went away for some training. He was gone for 2 weeks when the trainer called and said he had run into a fence post and bruised his shoulder, the vet says that he needs to be rested for 6-8 weeks. So he came back to my farm. When I went to pick him up the trainer mentioned something about some muscle atrophy in his shoulder and said since he is young(4) and never really been worked it was probably related to a weak hind end, poor conformation in the hind end. My question is this what does muscle atrophy look like? I have looked for unevenness in his shoulder and I just don't see any. I consider myself to be a perceptive and knowlegable horse person. The trainer is saying that it may not be worth the money to break this horse. He will probably always have lameness problems due to his hind end. Like I said there is more to this story but these are the essential facts. Is there anyone out there that can tell me what muscle atrophy is? Thanks Robbie Phillips@nternet.net

Essentially the body is filled out and rounded with muscle and fat. When the muscle atrophies the body is not filled out as much as it was. If the atroph is unilateral it is very easy to see as assymetry in the body shape when the left is conpared to the right. When the atrophy is symmetrical it may be hard to see until moderate to severe. The relation to hind end problems is far fetched unless the horse is so lame behind he does not pasture exercise. DrO
