My mare is definetly not pregnant we`ve had blood tests and examinations. So why does she have milk and sometime drip milk or wax on a regular basis? Is there any cause for concern ? Ive never known a mare do that before!

My mare does this in the summer months. It is called witch's milk. I think it is related to their cycle. I just make sure she stays clean and don't worry about it. She tends to have rather noticeable teats and when she had a foal years ago had a very large bag. So maybe it is somehow related.

I have a mare also who produces milk every summer and she has been doing it for ten years! Only one vet in the beginning said to check her thyroid. It was normal. Since then whenever I mention it to any vet, they just sort of laugh it off. The mare is very healthy, she has had no problems like mastitis and it certainly doesn't seem to bother her. I was always curious though, and really kept forgetting to ask, if she could nurse an orphan foal with this milk or if it is not nutrient rich. Anyone know the answer to that? If you do ..please pass it on... By the way she is 20 years old.

Hello All, No this milk would not be nutritious enough or have enough volume, at least initially, to nurse a foal. However with constant stimulation of nursing some mares do come into normal lactation. Recently I heard of a mare that had gone past her due date with no milk and they started her of domperidone, she started milking heavily, and when someone got around to check her it turns out she was not pregnant.
