My wife's mare was found laying in the field on a cold February morning last winter. She was sweating one one side and freezing to the ground on the other. We got her up and into the barn and called the vet. By the time he arrived she was experiencing laminitis and starting to founder. Quick work brought her back to health (never found a reason) but ever since then she seems to salivate excessively. She also licks everything that she can touch. She has a mineral block and uses it frequently but still continues to lick and salivate, even after 6 months have passed. I also notice that her coat of hair is blotchy and thicker in places. She seems normal in all other respects. We have had her trail riding many times since then and she performs wonderfully but I am concerned about the salivation and blotchy coat. Should I be?

SORRY THAT i DID NOT GET BACK TO YOU DR O. I WAS OUT OF TOWN. THE BLOTCHY COAT IS NOW GONE. IT MUST HAVE BEEN THE WAY SHE WAS SHEDDING HER COAT. IT WAS LONGER IN SOME AREAS THAN OTHERS. SHE HAS PERFORMED WELL ALL SUMMER LONG ON TRAIL RIDES - JUST A WONDERFUL MARE, BUT SHE LITERALY DRIPS SALIVA WHEN EATIN HER GRAIN/OATS. SHE ALSO STILL LICKS EVERYTHING IN SIGHT. SINCE SHE SEEMS FINE IN ALL OTHER RESPECTS I GUESS I HAVEN'T BEEN TOO WORRIED ABOUT IT BUT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THERE IS SOMETHING I SHOULD BE DOING FOR HER. COMMENTS APPRECIATED.

Well Larry, you should be taking good care of her and as long as you are doing that I would not worry about the fact that she salivates heavily and licks things. DrO
