Hi Dr. O, I have a seven month old chestnut filly TB/Han cross whose mother was a non-sweater. The humidity here in S Fla has kicked up again the last couple of weeks, and the filly is not sweating-at all!! Obviously, she is not in work at 7 mos of age. Are you aware of any genetic components of anhiDrOsis? The filly is physically very similar to her mom in markings and color. Any suggestions how to proceed with her at this young age? Thanks, Linda

It is unlikely that at this age and prior to work that your horse has developed anhiDrOsis but the article gives you ways to diagnose this problem. If you really are worried you can have the test run. I do not know of any genetic predisposition to the disease. We think that all horses are at risk for this problem with enough stress, work, heat and humidity. DrO PS, when you post a new question you should start your own discussion and not post it at the bottom of someone else's discussion. When you create your own discussion, it keeps discussions easy to read and you will get more responses quicker. The buttons for starting new discussions are at the bottom of most pages with a list of subtopic titles on it. Lets go ahead and finish this here and later I will move it into its own discussion.

My now six month old foal did not appear to sweat for maybe his first five months or so and we had a really hot humid summer here (still are). He otherwise seemed fine and happy. Finally one day after running around he was sweaty and he has been sweaty from exercise since then. I was a bit concerned too but it passed. My situation not entirely parallel to yours as his dam sweats at the DrOp of a hat.
