Posted on Tuesday, Aug 7, 2001 - 9:05 am: My 15 week old QH filly was diagnosed with club feet by my vet about 3 weeks ago. She has had her heels trimmed twice by this vet, but the front right is obviously clubbing and the foal limps slightly. I have suggested we bring in a good farrier to help with the problem, but the vet does not want to do this. This vet has already mentioned surgery, though he states that he agrees with me that we should exhaust all other possible treatments first. For one thing, this filly and her mother get only 5 hours outside each day at our present boarding facility. I am moving them in 5 days to another facility where they will get at least 8 hours in the pasture each day and am considering going to night turnout so they will get even more. Do you think being in the stall too much - 19 hours each day - may have something to do with the feet clubbing? Also, this foal has not shed her "foal coat" and it is quite thick and woolly. Could this tenacious coat be a tie-in with the club feet in indicating a particular medical condition? Thank you so much for your time. |

For recommendations on specific causes and treatments see the article, Equine Diseases: Lameness: Foot and Sole Problems: Club Foot.It is normal for a foal of this age to still be wooly with its foal coat and he still has some "ugly stages" to go through as he sheds it out.
