Hi. I have a Appy mare that has a bald itchy patch on her belly. I applied an antibiotic/general healing ointment to it and when I checked on it a few days later there were these dark, little, rice-shaped only smaller things stuck to her bald spot. The area is a little swollen where the worst of the "eggs/larva" were. They brushed off easily, but what are they and how do you prevent /treat them? I assume that they are opportunistic in that the "eggs/larva" are only where the skin already has a problem . Are these the screwworms I read about? Or are they blowflies?- But I thought blowfiles go for dead tissue not just a patch of what looks like a dry, slightly scaly baldish area. Or could they have been attracted to the ointment? Any suggestions/ thoughts? Thanks, Brenda

Without seeing them I am not sure what they are Brenda. Next time you see them collect them in a jar and take then to your vet, if they are fly eggs, he hay not be able to id them until they hatch out however. The larvae are characterisitic for the different species of fly. DrO
