Dr. O I have some concerns about my soon to be yearling Oldenburg. He is drinking a ton of water and consequently urinating large amounts, too. He was an orphan, raised on the bucket. He used to slurp his milk replacer down, too. I am not sure if this is just the way he is, or if I should have him tested for DM? He is 15HH at one and a big boy, could it just be his way of going? Thank you.

Hello Rae, There are a number of more likely possibilities Rae and we explore them at Equine Diseases » Urinary System » Excessive Drinking and Urination, Polydipsia / Polyuria (PD/PU). DrO}

Dr. O I have a 7 year old Halflinger mare who consumes tons of water and then pees it all out, making her stall a mess. She seems better if she is turned out but still drinks tons. She doesn't seem to exhibit any of the classic symptoms of any of the problems discussed in the article on polydipsia. Could it be boredom? Any suggestions on what to do if it's not physical? Should I restrict her water consumption? Thanks

Hello Connie, Unfortunately some of the problems that might cause your horse to get sick if you restrict water consumption only have initial symptoms of excessive water consumption and urination. You should do this with the help or your vet and we would suggest following the instructions in the article. DrO PS You need to learn to start a new post when asking questions about your own horse. You will find the new discussion button at the bottom of the list of existing discussions on the article page. For more see The Posting Rules which can be accessed beside the posting form.
