I have a one month old foal that has pneumonia due to asperating mineral oil. We we concerned with him injesting sand and gave him mineral oil as a prevention. Needless to say, we have another problem on hand. He has been on antibotics for three days now. Gentoein, 3cc , Metronidazde and SMZ. He is also on gastrogaid. He seems to be improving. His severe rattling has become a whistle but his temperature will still rise to 105 from time to time. What is our long term prognosis? Will this leave scars on the lungs and become a chronic problem?

Hello Marchetta,
We cannot answer your questions with the information you provide. Aspiration pneumonia can be tough to treat and much depends on how much oil he aspirated and what types of bacteria/fungi become established.

To answer your questions radiography, with a large institutional machine, of the lungs may reveal the amount of permanent damage. His fever is NOT a sign of chronic problems however. From physical exam respiratory rate and auscultation may be your best indicators of damage, but cannot differentiate acute, which can be better, from chronic changes. Only time will tell you that. I will keep my fingers crossed and let us know how he is does.
