The trainer where my horse caught strangles last winter had cases for months after. A pony there has been dealing with hoof abscesses since it got bastard strangles in May. First one entire hoof nearly came off after the leg was swollen for a long time, now the farrier we have in common says the pony is about to lose most of the sole on another foot from the same problem. Since I was considering riding with people who board at his place it is important for me to know if it is reasonable that the pony's problems could still be from a strangles related abscess, and if so, is it still contagious? It seems like a long time to me, but I'd rather not bring that mess home with one of my horses! Can the foot still harbor strangles pathogens?

Erika i think i would be more concern re the farrier we have in common.. On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with spots..

Whenever anyone asks if something is possible the answer almost always is "yes it is possible". The reasons this question is so weak is it is impossible to prove a negative supposition. It seems unlikely that these horses represent a likely source of contagion because of this pony's foot abscesses. But strangles does have a way of persisting in active boarding barns, particularly if the horses are vaccinated (see the article for more on this) perhaps you should give your horses (except the one that had the strangles last year) the IN Strangles following the recommendations in the article and then worry a bit less and enjoy the ride. Yeah, I should have known better than to ask the "possible" question! My horses are vaccinated due to the filly having had it. Guess I won't worry. Ann, do you mean because of carrying contagions between clients? The farrier is well aware of that possibility. She has concerns for her own horses, too. She has assured me that the particular farm in question is always the last stop of the day, and she says she disinfects her instruments after being there. Gotta go on blind faith somewhat though, don't I? Thanks, Erika
