The New Jersey Department of Agriculture issued a quarantine Oct. 26 on more than 1,000 horses at Monmouth Park in the wake of positive test results on at least one horse for the neuropathogenic strain of the equine herpes virus.

At least four horses have been tested over the past several days after they began exhibiting fevers. Those four, and other horses at Monmouth Park that have had contact with those horses, have been separated from the rest of the equine population there and are in designated quarantine barns. All horses in the quarantined barns at the park will not be permitted to move to other facilities until they have shown no indications of the disease for at least 21 days.

I picked up the NJ state vets directions for handling this situation and have listed the web site below. Curious if there are different disinfectants, or is there only one for barns, because I'm not aware of it. It's a good look into biosecurity measures and whether they are sufficient. Also points to the fact that this is big business in states running tracks.

It would have been nice if the sheet had recommendations for disinfectants. You suspect what is used on the horse will be different than what is used on the stall walls. I suspect chlorhexidine shampoos for the horses and quaternary ammonium salts (A-33) for the inanimate surfaces.
