I thought I'd contribute what I've found to be an excellent applicator for the Povidone-Iodine. I went to Sally Beauty Supply and bought a hair color applicator bottle ($1.50) and it does a super job. It has a long, narrow tube that gets way down in the cracks and crevices and gets the liquid right where you need it to go, without hardly any waste at all.

Thanks Trudy, I will certainly use your tip. I always keep betadine in the barn and have used a spray bottle in the past but the sprayer clogs easily in cold weather. Your idea will work much better!

I've added the applicator to my shopping list. Another tip, if you need to wash out a wound with a little bit of pressure is to use a baby's nose syringe filled with either betadine solution, or saline, or whatever you're using. Of course, a regular syringe works, too, but much smaller amounts. I wonder if one of those baby enema containers (like we use on foals) couldn't be rinsed out and used also.

I have been using the old die bottles for years now... they work great.. for larger abscesses you can use a turkey baster.. or I have been very lucky my girl friend is a trauma nurse and she brings me the bags of saline and a long hose like attachment.. I use that and squeeze.. !~

On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with spots..

Ann that hose would be IV tubing! Too cool. Great Idea. But the die bottle applicator would work great as well.....neat tricks. We women are inventive!
