Hi Dr. O - Thanks for the great articles on worming. It has helped me a lot as I am new to this whole area. My horse Pepper lives at a 10 horse, closed barn, although she has gained a new stallmate this week. She - as well as the rest of the horses - are on a daily Strongid pellet (as well as being on the Preventicare program) and has been on this worming program for 18 months. Prior that, her former owner had her on a rotating paste wormer (and I was told by former owner that I wouldn't be able to use a daily wormer because she would get "wormy" - whatever). Manure is dumped and spread over grassy riding areas but not in the pastures. Pastures do have good drainage. She does eat her hay off the ground in her paddock. However, I do not think the barn manager does a deworming for Bots' twice a year and so I will add it to our program. My question - Pepper is rubbing her tail - and I've gone and read your article about tail rubbing and will look closer at the tail today but I am wondering, with the current worming program, could this be parasite/worm problem? Pepper shows no sign of weight loss. When the barn owner checked into having fecal samples checked on another horse (who was having colic problems) she was told that by various vets in Tulsa, Oklahoma, that they do not do fecals.
