Discussion on Swollen anus after one week regimen of Bute
Author Message

Dr. O,

You assisted me in another forum with a hoof injury a couple weeks ago. I was giving my mare 1gm bute twice a day for pain and inflamation. After a week I noticed her anus was swollen and protruding which I can describe as the size of a doughnut. Her vulva shows no signs of swelling or irritation. Her stools are normal in size, consistancy and color, her activity, appetite, gum color, general condition all seem normal (she is feeling so good she jumped out of our small paddock clearing the four foot fence in two strides). Should I be concerned about this swelling?

Hello Michelle,
Without examining the horse I cannot know if this is a cause of concern but the bute is not a likely cause. If the appearance of the anus has recently changed remarkably and it remains that way I would have my veterinarian come take a look.
