Due to blizzard, -25 with very strong wind, tv just said windchill of -49, drifting snow, I wasn't able to go to where my mare lives to give her her penicillin, this would be her 3 of 5. I am fairly sure I will be able to get there today but only if the road is plowed out. I am not sure how to ask this, will missing/resuming the penicillin lessen its potency? Should I start a new set of 5? The wound is small, and if its possible to say this it is only slightly infected.

Lori, I can't say for sure how it works for horses, but with people and cats/dogs, the label always reads that if a dose is missed, give as soon as possible and then resume the prescribed schedule. Not sure why it would be any different for a horse.

Lori, what type penicillin, what dosage, and frequency are you giving it? Is the wound open and draining well? Is there any sign the infection is spreading? DrO

the penicillin is procain, the dose is 3cc per 100lb, with a weight tape my mare is 1200lbs so 36cc's. The wound is open and draining, the swelling is down somewhat already, there is only heat directly on top of the wound, np apparent tenderness any where in fact, she is not favoring her leg at all. I don't know how other than a tender heat trail to tel if the infection is spreading. Thank you

Procaine penicillin should be given twice daily for maximal effectiveness Lori and I get the impression that you are just giving it once a day. Those are all good indications the wound is healing well. DrO
