I have seen a product that you add to the feed but nothing about it's efficacy. In general we know dewormers worm much better on a empty stomach (for more on this see Horse Care » Worms, Deworming, Parasite Control » Overview of Deworming. If the dosage is correct and it can be given with a minimum amount of food, I don't know why any reason it should not work, but it should be checked for efficacy by testing.

Good morning,
We use the pour on, but orally on our horses. 10 ml for your average 1100 lb horse. Works well, we see what we're to see a few days later. I do know it dosen't get all types, sorry I'm not sure which it all gets.

I don't know how I missed that R Meese was asking about the cattle PourOn products. The short answer is no one has developed and tested a product for equine use.

Michelle, I have had a few clients go to this form of dosing and often when we check fecals invariably we find it is not working well. Some of the problems we have encountered is proper dosage and even appropriate drug. There are a number of different deworming products that are sold as Pour On's and sometimes they have picked up the wrong product or calculated the dose wrong. For instance if you are using the standard 5 mg/ml Ivomec Pour On (or one of the generic look alikes) at the dosage rate you state above, you are giving about one half the recommended amount of ivermectin per lb of horse (91 mcg/lb). With a formulation that has not been tested for efficacy as you are using it and has a label that warns against oral administration.

Dr O,
Thanks, it was actually our vet that told us to go that way, I'll have to discuss this further with him.
