My vet is going to prescribe it for me, and he said I should try to find it first.

Dr O., What is the dosage, and how often do you give it? Why would it be different for a horse than a human? I can understand the absorbsion might be different for a horse, but human doses don't vary by weight for Depo, so why should horses? Alicia

If you run a search here on "froogle", you'll get to Christine Mill's excellent tip on how to use Google's cost comparison advanced search "Froogle". It brings up all sorts of great entries for Depo Provera. Thanks, Christine!

Depo-Provera in horses is an off label use Alicia. There are no established dosages or pharmokinetics in horses that I am aware of. You frequently see the 3 to 5 ml recommendations but I have not really seen that this dose stops mares from cycling. DrO

Dr. O., My doctor told me to use 600 mg, then another 400 mg 60 days later. This is 1.5 mL in my 400 mg/ml bottle I am getting. In a regular dosage, 150 mg/ml, that would be 4 ml, then 1.5 ml 60 days later. He got this from a repro expert at some college (sorry, I don't remember who). I figure it's worth a try. Easy to administer, legal, and not dangerous for females to handle. I just hope it doesn't change her personality, which I love in or out of heat! If it doesn't work, I may try the marble. If that doesn't work, I will revert back to buting her three out of every 21 days in the summer! Alicia

Thats great Alicia, and thanks for the dosage clarification, I was unaware (or had forgotten) there were 2 concentrations. Let us know if it stops your mare from cycling. DrO

I will let you know. I should be getting it this week. She is scheduled to come into heat the 9th, so it is good timing. Alicia
