Hello to all. I am new on the site and really need help. I have a 4mo filly with septic physitis. The Erythromicin tid dosing won't be doable. Does any one know if Zithromax can be subbed, and if so, what is the dose?? SU

Azithromycin is an experiemtal drug in horses and there are no well established doses. Also there is a limited amount known about side effects and toxic reactions. In spite of this the drug is seeing growing use in horses partially due to the convenience. The pharmokinetics of the medication in foals does have some preliminary study and the dosage of 10 mg/kg of azithromycin p.o. once daily for foals with R. equi pneumonia may be appropriate.

Dear Dr. Oglesby,
Thanks for your response. It looks as though I will be starting the rifampin/azithromycin combo in the morning. Neither of the vets I have consulted has ever treated this problem. The filly has had neonatal sepsis from a patent urachus and abdominal surgery already. She was heretofor recovering uneventfully. She has some visible physis swellings, but is not lame. Have you ever seen these cases do well? Stacy

Not being able to see your foal I am unable to compare with cases that I have seen. If she is not lame septic physitis is very unlikely as it is very painful.
