Hi Dr.O... My mares' right, front suspensory was a little tender after showing in 3 3'6 classes at Indio. Vet checked... nothing serious. The next day she was better and showed in same classes again. That evening I suggested to trainer that we give her some Bute and trainer said she was going to give her Banamine instead. Never heard of the drug being used for this condition. Read the articles and I can't come to a clear conclusion that Banamine is the drug of choice for soreness. Any recommendations? Thanks, Molly

Yes, I'd be interested too. I have read that it's Banamine for colic and Bute for muscular-skeletal problems. I do admit that I've had better results with bute for desmitis...

The reason you can't come to a clear conclusion is because both drugs have plusses and minuses. We discuss these and compare the drugs directly in the article Equine Medications and Nutriceuticals » Anti-inflammatories: NSAID's, Steroids, and Arthritis Treatment »
An Overview of NSAID's
. Using this article should allow you oth to answer your questions.

Molly,
I think banamine is better for minor injuries and strains that are expected to resolve in a couple of days, especially to prevent local swelling, especially at the lower leg. It has worked very well for our horses. Sometimes, rarely, I even use one dose preventively, when I do know that the horse's legs have suffered a lot of extra punishment from unexpected terrain and things like that.
I use bute only if long term treatment is required, say more than two days. I think bute is better when overall relief is needed, cheaper for long treatment and easier, as it can be administered orally.
