Hi,

We have a 4 year old mare who has very strong heats and is cranky and pushes her side up against the stall wall almost falling and sitting down. She also refuses to go when you put your leg on her and stops when she is passing another horse moving closer to them.

Our trainer said there was a shot they can get every 3-4 weeks she wasn't sure of the name or how often. She said a client had a mare who was horrible in heat and when she was on this shot she was like a gelding.

Does anyone know what this shot is so I can ask my vet about it when they do coggins and shots. We are going to have a culture done and also have her palpated.

Thanks

You may be thinking of Depo Provera. It is a human birth control drug. It worked for my mare. I didn't want to change her behavior, though. I just wanted to stop her from cycling as she has very painful heats. It did do that.

Thanks, How much did you give your horse and how often? Did your vet recommend it? Our mare has very painful heats cycles and even if you touch her by the flank area she buckles under almost falling. She acts like it hurts alot and we show so she doesn't concentrate as well because of the discomfort.

Is this product widely used for horses?

Thanks

Lori,
Here is an excerpt from another post I did here.

"My doctor told me to use 600 mg, then another 400 mg 60 days later. This is 1.5 mL in my 400 mg/ml bottle I am getting. In a regular dosage, 150 mg/ml, that would be 4 ml, then 1.5 ml 60 days later."

So, you give almost 3 bottles the first time, then one bottle every 2 months.

I don't know how widely used it is.
My mare had a hematoma on her ovary, which seems to recur. That is why I wanted to stop her cycling. Lots of pain, and one time, it caused her internal bleeding. I am breeding her this year, so I won't have to worry about it this time!

My 4 year old mustang mare also has difficult heats. She squirts, squeals, and refuses to go, when around other horses. Worse yet, when riding her, she squeals when getting on her, when putting pressure to her sides and "just because." When not in season, she does not behave this way. I do not show and have no plans to breed her. We just do the trails with friends. If anyone knows of supplements, hormone therapy, or any other way to calm this girl down during heat cycles, please help! Thanks.

Dr. O,
I noticed her difficult heats around June 2005. We live in Phoenix, Arizona, so it's very warm (hot) until September/October. I have only been riding her for a about a year, regularly, for about 6 months. When she squeals at me riding her, is it because she's in pain, or is she just being moody?

Being moody Cammie. We have an article on this problem at Training Horses » Behavioral Problems » Suppressing Heat and Estral Behavior in Mares.

Dr. O,
The article was very informative. Thank you. I will talk to my vet before taking the next move.
