Hi I was wondering if anyone had used this new combination of Moxidectin and Praziquantel (spelling??). It looks like it controls more worms, including tapes, than most wormers, but if my horse is on Strongid 2x daily wormer is it safe to give this combination while still giving the daily wormer??? The info I'vr found does not address this issue. Any info much appreciated. My quarter horse eats well(also gets rice bran) but is "ribby", otherwise healthy.-Beth Gordon

I have not seen any studies that address the praziquantel on top of pyrantel (Strongid) issue. I know of no problems but this is an unneccesssary risk as the Strongid should do a great job of controlling tapes, the reason for adding the praziquantel.

Dr. O:

I have my horse on Strongid C2x as well. I have never wormed her for tapes and was considering using the Equimax this spring instead of the usual Ivermectin. To clarify: Are you saying that if the horse is on Strongid C2x the praziquantel is unnecessary? If so, I'll just do the usual Ivermectim worming. (Horse is healthy and at a good weight. I've had her 1 1/2 yrs. and only used Ivermectin and the Strongid 2x daily). Thanks.

Dr. O:
My horses are on Strongid C2X. I already purchased a combination product (I think it was Zimectrin Gold). Am I just wasting money, or am I incurring risk if I use that product while the horses are on daily de-wormer?
Thanks,

Dr. O -
I re-read the worming recommendations, and I thought I found a program that combines daily dewormer with Zimectrin Gold or similar products - did I misinterpret that article?
Thanks,

Dr O - somehow this post DrOpped of the radar screen. We never got an answer to this question. I am reading under the recommendations for daily dewormer that one can use ivermectin with praziquantel or Quest Plus along with the daily Strongid, but, your answer above indicated there may be some risk??
Thanks,
Lilo

Liselotte, I went and looked at the deworming programs and see what you are talking about. There is no need to use the praziquantel combination products after the initial deworming as new tape exposure should be controlled by the daily strongid and will edit the schedule to reflect that.

I would still use the initial combination product because I have never seen evidence that the daily Strongid will kill already established adult tapes. There is no published risk of using praziquantel with strongid in horses but neither is it established as being safe so the risk is acceptable to eliminate established adults but there is no need to continue using it as long as you are diligent with daily Strongid.

Thanks, Dr. O!

The combination products were not available when I started my horses on the daily Strongid. If I wanted to be sure no established tapes remained, would it be safer to use a double dose of Strongid paste while they are on the daily Strongid?

Thanks again,
Lilo

Safer perhaps, we do not know, but not as effective. I would use the praziquantel product personally if I had a clear indication I needed to kill adult tapes and I think your case is such a case.
